INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL FACTORS
How they affect our performance, and how we can best cope with them, can make a huge difference to the desired outcome. First, look at a few examples of external factors:- venue, size of floor and temperature of room. Many dancers, when they see that a floor is too small or too big, almost panic and focus on the negative effect it will have. Try to avoid this by quietly taking yourself to a spot and think over where you need to adjust things i.e. maybe where you need to travel less or more, what point on floor is best to finish steps, as this may vary from floor to floor. Of course, speak this over with your teacher, but give time to re-think where needed. Another external factor would be, do you know the venue? If not, getting there early to have a look around and plan your performance will really help. Another really important external factor is warming up and learning exactly how much you, as a dancer, needs to perform at your best. Each dancer differs slightly and getting to know this can really help you feel ready for your performance!
Now let’s look at internal factors. Nerves! Often, we say to ourselves phrases like “don’t be nervous...be confident”. If anything, this type of thing makes us worse! Instead go over again, quietly in your mind, the positive points that you have achieved e.g. corrections you have made, fitness that has been gained, amount of practice put in and so on. These will have a much better effect on how you feel. Visualisation is also a great tool. Again, sit quietly and go over, step by step, exactly what you will do on stage. Focus on some key corrections and the performance style that you want to portray...again, your teacher will help with this.
These are just a few examples. Other external factors are amount of rest, amount of practice, food etc. Internal factors include knowing steps inside out...this will really affect how you feel inside and you will know, at that point, you have done all you can to prepare.
Good luck, empower yourself with these things and they will definitely help! X
